DESIGNERS - TEST

 

 

   

Selection of members for the product design and development team is quite crucial since company will

depend on their knowledge and skills for many years.

One of the best and most effective ways to evaluate abilities of designers and engineers is to test them.

Test should be formed as questions and short tasks to enable evaluation of knowledge, skills and talents.

Good test can depict skills of designers on the existing team as well, and help the team leader with proper

distribution of various design tasks between designers.

 

Some design schools use tests for acceptance to the school and some of those tests expose excellently

knowledge, imagination, creativity and problem solving skills of the young people. Some of those tasks

are formed similarly the following:

- Use the given paper and adhesive tape to build protection for an egg that will be dropped on a concrete.

- Use piece of paper to form bridge with a particular length that can support as much load as possible.

- Use plastic bottle, cork, rope and elastics to build a toy for a preschool kid.

 

Those type of tests can show wide range of knowledge and skills expected from designers and allow for

creative fun during their completion. But they are time consuming and may look tricky to perform if time

available for an interview is limited and may look not very serious for some candidates and HR group.

Therefore the other tasks that look more professional are usually preferred.

 

Here are samples of the short tests used for evaluation of knowledge, imagination, creativity and manual

skills of designers. This test has been used additionally to a verbal interviews of candidates for designers

position and for discovering of skills and knowledge of the already formed design team as well.

The following sequence of the test questions is not related to the preferred importance of skills expected

from designers since those expectation can be vary for different companies of design managers.

 

A - Spatial imagination with ability to picture objects from different views and ability to sketch those views

should be the fundamental skills expected from designers. Therefore given tasks should expose those

skills and understanding of complex 3D geometries by the designer.

 

- Sketch standard drawing views of this object.
- Sketch an ISO view of this object.

- Describe a method you would use to create a 3D surface or solid model of

the gear shifter head presented on these views.

- How much time would you need to create this form on CAD?

 

B - Understanding of physics and mechanics are extremely important since correctness of the design

decisions depends on the available knowledge. The largest part of the product problems are caused

by not applying the appropriate knowledge to the designed features. Therefore tests should focus on

the applicant's knowledge as well.

 

- Solid block made of material "A" with a total mass "M" and a foot print area "P"

is pushed on the horizontal surface made of material "B". Which parameters

would you change to reduce force "F" needed for this block displacement.

- Cylinder "A" is pressed into the cylinder "B" with interference and there is

a moment of force required to rotate the cylinder "A" within the cylinder "B".

Which dimensions affect the value of that moment of force?

- Beam is fixed to the wall and is loaded at the end as shown.

Where is the location of the highest stress and what type of stress is it?

Sketch a shape of the beam deflection from the applied force.

What should be a profile of the beam to minimize its deflection?

What value of force "F" is required to support the weight "W"

- diameter D = 2 x d

- distance b = 2 x c

Deflection of the 2"x4" lumber beam supported at both ends is tested with

a bucket full of water. Board is tested for its horizontal (H) and vertical (V)

orientation. Does a change of the beam orientation affect its deflection?

If yes, then which orientation is stiffer and how much?

 

 

C - Ability to imagine a process allows for making quick and proper answers without making complex

calculations. Design decisions are made quite often just by intuition that relates to our knowledge

and previous experience. Therefore;

 

- Material of the square plate with the round hole uniformly shrinks.

Will the hole get bigger or smaller?

After folding a single sheet of paper for 5 times its multilayer stack thickness

is about 3 mm. What will be its thickness after folding 50 times?

 

D - Creativity is an essential skill of designers and it is demonstrated mostly as an ability of transforming

the existing features and values to new features and values. Tasks presented below can expose creativity

of the person and may indicate if that person thinks visually or verbally.

 

A solid post is located on the middle of the square plate.

Sketch or list all possible transformations of the form (i.e. post can be shorter)

What objects can you create using a circle.

Sketch or list all possibilities (example: face).

Find all possible uses for at least one of the following:

- empty plastic bottle

- wire hanger

- empty tissue box

 

E - Logical thinking and finding quick solutions is expected from all designers since design process is filled

with never-ending challenges. It is tricky to substitute design challenges with short time test but few of these

questions can expose intelligence of the interviewed designer.

 

Replace the question mark with the next correct number in the following sequences:

Sequence A: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, ?

Sequence B: 1, 1, 2, 4, 3, 9, 4, ?

Sequence C: 2, 3, 5, 7, 13, 17, 19, 23, ?

Ten pairs of the grey gloves are mixed with seven pairs of the white gloves in an

absolutely dark room. How many gloves do you have to bring out to be sure that

you have one pair of grey gloves?
