Some
areas of knowledge are not well understood and terminology
related to those fields may be used
with an intuitively assumed meanings that can be different
than the actual meanings of those words.
Additionally some dictionaries describe those words with
differences that may cause confusion instead
of clarification.
Imagination is one of those terms that is used interchangeably
with creativity, inventiveness, intuition
or conceptualizing. Knowledge of the proper description
of words helps during discussions related to
the particular field.
Meanings of the terms listed below are based on descriptions
found in dictionaries and tens of articles
including professional books and summaries. Some of those
terms:
Creativity
- (1) Creativity is an ability for thinking in novel ways,
and a mental ability to produce, imagine
and describe new ideas that have an original quantitative
or qualitative values.
(2) Creativity is a mental skill to process information
using techniques appropriate for generating the new
original ideas by combining, changing, or reapplying the
existing ideas.
Creative thinking
- is a mental ability to change features of the imagined
objects or imagined structures,
processes, situations or messages and transform them to
the new objects, structures, processes, ....
Design
- (1) Design is a decision-making process of transforming
ideas to creating products with functions
and forms (objects, structure, processes or services) for
a specific operational, aesthetic or information
purpose and making them working before they become physically
existed or built as prototypes.
(2) Design is the human activity and effort of generating
ideas and transforming them to plans or drawing
of the imagined intentional products with functions and
forms.
(3) Design is the a final result of designing process
recorded as a plan or drawing with a detailed pictures
of the form and description of materials of the final functional
product to be manufactured.
(4) Design is a finished artistic or decorative creation
of forms, colors and textures.
Designer
- is a person who devises or executes designs, especially
one who creates forms, functions,
structures and patterns, and usually works on art, mass
production products or machines.
Engineer
- (1) Engineer is a person who applies the scientific and
mathematical principles for designing,
development, manufacturing, construction, operating, managing
and maintaining of structures, mass
products, processes and systems build of materials or
information.
(2) Engineer is a person trained or professionally engaged
in any branch of the profession of engineering.
(3) Engineer is a driver of a railway locomotive in US
or Canada.
Engineering
- is the profession and technology of acquiring and applying
scientific,
mathematical,
economic,
social, and practical knowledge, in order to design
and build structures, machines, devices,
systems, materials, information and processes.
Idea/Concept
- result of the creative imagination formed as object, structure,
process, situation or message.
Imagination
- is the mental ability to visualize pictures of people,
object, structure, process, situation, message
and their possible subsequent changes or to "see"
dynamic transformations of the imagined objects
Implementation
- process of putting ideas into the practice or realization
of the plan that results in a
functional product.
Industrial
Design - is the discipline, art,
skill and profession of creating and developing product
concepts
and designs for their operational use functions, appearance
and manufacturability. Industrial Design uses
combination of applied art and applied science to develop
aesthetics, ergonomics, usability, operational use
functionality of products and systems for creating the
best market value.
Industrial Designer
- is a person that creates ideas and definitions of products
by development of design
solutions for problems of forms, functions, physical ergonomics,
marketing, brand development, and sales.
Innovation
- Innovation as a stage is the real functional product of
creativity implementation. That product
can be formed as the object, structure (i.e. organizational
or information), process or message.
Innovating as the process can be described as the continuous
challenging and changing of the
product's status-quo for its value improvement.
Inspiration
- is described as a spark of intuition to solve the uniqueness
in a problem.
Intuition
- ability to describe the correct solutions to the problem
without analyzing the problem or to make
fast correct decisions without having to compare options.
Intuition is expressed as a result of the
experience and knowledge and intuition results are proportional
to the acquired knowledge.
Invention
- a new, useful process, machine, improvement, etc., that
did not exist previously and that is
recognized as the product of some unique creativity, as
distinguished from ordinary mechanical
skill or craftsmanship.
Knowledge
- information that can be recalled. Knowledge is an accumulation
of information memorized
during education, from experience and live observations,
information read from environment, info from
media, own thoughts, dreams ...etc.
Knowledge provides description for "what, where and
when" questions.
Skills
- are human abilities or qualities which can be applied
almost automatically.
Skills include inborn or developed abilities of receiving
unique information through our senses from
surroundings or to respond with unique physical, mental,
psychic, spiritual and paranormal actions.
Understanding
- knowledge of cause-effect relations and skill capacity
to use concepts creatively.
Understanding is the ability to explain effects of changes
applied to people, living world, objects,
structures, processes, situations or messages.
Understanding provides explanation to "why and how"
questions.
